The Artist - Erica Reshef
|

The Jewish
home today, like the Temple in old times, is furnished with ritual
objects that enhance its traditions and celebrations. These ritual
objects have always been the subject of Jewish folk art. Though
time has altered artistic styles, the symbols and narratives have been
carefully preserved from generation to generation. Having grown in
a traditional Jewish home where artistic expression was greatly
encouraged, I found a medium by which to combine my love for art with my
heritage.
I was trained
as a Visual Arts Teacher in Oranim College in Haifa, Israel, with an emphasis
on Judaic symbols through history. Teaching art in Israel enabled me to absorb and
implement the rich artistic elements of Israeli culture within the
classroom. In 1982 my family and I moved to Edmonton,
Alberta, Canada where I completed a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Arts
Education. While studying, I continued to teach Judaic studies in
Talmud Torah, integrating art education with biblical stories and
holidays.
The turning
point in my personal artistic career began with preparing the ketubah
for my son's wedding in 1993. Since then, the focus of my work
commemorates the joyous moments of Jewish celebrations with ketubot for
weddings, invitations and dedications for Bar/Bat Mitzvah, birth
announcements, anniversaries, marriage reaffirmations, and home amulets.
Working with mixed media (acrylic, watercolour, paper cut, and various
collages) my work combines contemporary
and traditional style with the beauty of nature and the grace of the
Hebrew alphabet. It is inspired by quotes from the
bible, prayer book, saying of our sages, and holidays.
Through art I can communicate a spiritual connection to my heritage,
while immersing myself in the intricate beauty of its symbols and
messages.
