Newsletter – June 2010

Welcome Note:

As we wrap-up this lovely spring session, we would like to extend a warm thank-you to all who have made the last three years a great success! We invite you to join us on Sunday June 20th (3-5pm) for our End-of-Term Art Show, and celebrate with us the completion of our third year of artistic exploration and inspired creation.

Our Summer Art Camps, High School Art Workshop and Teachers' Workshop are booking fast. To secure your spot in one of our camps, you can now register online at: http://www.artventure.ca/summer_camps.htm or call us at 519.471.4278.

We are excited to feature Barbara Alkemade's latest collection of mixed media. Her show "The Artist's Journey" explores a narrative, from image to emotion to concept.  To view Barbara's journey of creation, check out her unique display May 31st through June 12th.

We hope you will join us for these and other events.

There will be no newsletter during the summer months.  Our September newsletter will be sent to you at the end of August.

The ArtVenture Team wishes you and your family a warm and safe summer holiday!

Did You Know?

A large number of primitive cultures created and wore ornate masks for religious rites, celebrations and communication with ancestors who had passed away. Some of the earliest masks were created and used in Egypt, used to cover the mummy's face. Early Eskimo death masks had eye holes blocked by eyes carved out of bone to keep spirits from going back into the body. In ancient China, masks of bright colors, such as yellow and red, were worn in religious ceremonies to represent the spirits of ancestors who could ward off illness and bring blessings to families. In Japan the Noh is a theatrical form of drama that offers insights into the emotion and character of the actor. In all, the different finely carved wooden masks convey about eighty distinct personalities and emotions; African masks, produced out of a variety of materials, were often worn in religious rituals to depict the ancestors' spirits and good/evil mythological beings.

Art Tips:

Masks may be built over a plaster cast, over a styrofoam ball, or directly on a person's face. First, tear the plaster bandages into thin strips. Secure the hair back and cover the face with a thin layer of Vaseline (make sure to cover eyebrows, eyelashes, and all other facial hair). Dip the plaster bandages into the water one at a time and smooth the bandages onto the face, overlapping each strip. Cover the entire face (except for the nostrils) with 3 layers of bandages and allow the cast to set. While the plaster is setting, it will heat slightly. Carefully remove the hardened cast from the face. To add character to the mask use additional strips of plaster to plug the nostril holes, and add bigger and bolder chin, cheeks, nose, lips, etc.
