Welcoming Art Historian Sonia Halpern back to our studio this spring, we look forward to exploring the different ways artists have used art as a creative outlet while dealing with internal suffering. When we look at beautiful works of art, it can be difficult to imagine that some of their creators experienced challenging psychological and physical ailments. Although some people believe that suffering is a natural part of the creative process, it is important to recognize that suffering can impede an artist's daily routine and productivity, making aspects of their lives difficult to manage. In this 6-part weekly lecture series, we will examine artists whose psychological or physical illnesses became a central part of their legacies. We will uncover how these artists dealt with their respective ailments and how these illnesses affected their artistic styles and subject matter. Covering artists Toulouse-Lautrec, Chaim Soutine, Frida Kahlo, and Canadian painter Maud Lewis, among others, we invite you to join us for this exploration of artists’ Paint and Suffering.
